Fast-paced action. Real teamwork. A challenge worth taking on. The Ashburton Paintball League (APL) Series gives you the chance to experience paintball as a competitive sport—one built on communication, quick decisions, skill and determination.

Whether you are trying paintball for the first time or are ready to take your game to the next level, the APL offers a welcoming pathway into organised tournament play. Its exciting 3-player format delivers short, intense points that test movement, accuracy, field awareness and teamwork.

No team? No problem. Experienced teams entered in the APL have agreed to welcome new players as guest members of their squads. You can learn alongside established competitors, experience an APL event from inside a team and find out whether tournament paintball is for you—without having to form your own squad first.

The 2026/2027 season features six rounds between October 2026 and May 2027. Teams earn ranking points at each event as they build towards the two-day finale on 10–11 April 2027. The final event includes round six, the double-knockout APL Open, the series finals and the one-on-one “Duel” for the title of APL Top Shooter. Events follow the 2026 NXL rules and applicable New Zealand Paintball Federation requirements, providing fair, consistent and safety-focused competition.

1. Try paintball: Book a recreational or introductory session. Rental equipment makes it easy to get started before you invest in your own gear.
2. Meet the community: Talk to APL players, teams and organisers about training days, beginner opportunities and squads welcoming new members.
3. Join a squad: Connect with an experienced team as a guest player, find two teammates or join an existing squad. The 3-player format makes competition accessible.
4. Build your skills: Practise movement, shooting, communication and teamwork at organised training sessions or scrimmages.
5. Learn as you play: You do not need to know every rule before taking part. Experienced players will explain what you need to know, help with safety and equipment, and guide you as your confidence grows.
6. Take the field: Register through the Ashburton Paintball website before entries close. Events are held at Ashburton Paintball Park or another venue selected by the organiser.

The APL can open the door to opportunities throughout competitive paintball, including national-level events. You might progress as a player, referee or scorekeeper, or help the crew deliver successful events behind the scenes. Whatever role interests you, the APL community can help you gain experience, build confidence and take your next step.

Your first event could be the start of something bigger. Come for the adrenaline, stay for the teamwork and discover where paintball can take you.
